NACIMIENTO / SOUTHERN MONTEREY COUNTY — October 30, 2026. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors considered a plan this spring to seek up to $400,000 in competitive state funding for equipment used in boating enforcement and public-safety patrols on Lakes Nacimiento and San Antonio. The proposal is recorded under Board File 26-396, dated April 28, 2026, and covers a replacement patrol boat and trailer, refurbishment of an existing patrol boat, and a personal watercraft (jet ski) with a trailer.

The public record establishes authority for the county to apply for grant funding. It does not establish that California State Parks awarded the money, that the county has already received a check, or that any new patrol vessel has been purchased. Indeed, the item explicitly directed Public Works, Facilities and Parks to return to the Board of Supervisors before accepting any grant award.

What equipment was requested?

According to the official Board of Supervisors item, the county department sought competitive funding from California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways. The stated request had three equipment elements:

  • One replacement patrol vessel and trailer for marine enforcement and rescue-related patrol operations.
  • Refurbishment of an existing patrol vessel to retain the usefulness of current equipment.
  • One personal watercraft and its trailer to support enforcement and public-safety patrols.

The file identifies both Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento as operational locations. It does not allocate a particular purchase to one lake alone, and the $400,000 is an application ceiling, not the final itemized bill for each craft or an amount of grant revenue already recorded.

Why the county wants marine equipment

The two reservoirs accommodate boating, fishing and other outdoor recreation, where public-safety teams may have to respond to stranded or distressed vessels, unsafe behavior, and conditions involving watercraft. The county administers lake and park programs, while state boating regulations and invasive-species screening apply separately. The grant request is for marine enforcement and public-safety patrols, not for building new boat ramps or expanding a resort hotel.

The official filing does not claim an unusual spike in rescues in the preceding month, establish that existing vessels were unsafe to operate, or provide verified individual incident statistics. Those would require separate incident logs, maintenance records and budget information. A plan to modernize equipment should be reported as a proposal without turning it into an unsupported emergency declaration.

What happened on April 28?

The county’s Legistar record shows File 26-396 under the April 28, 2026 Board of Supervisors agenda. The action authorized submission of the application and signature of documents needed for the grant process, and directed staff to come back to the board for any award acceptance. The public record available from this item does not identify an actual award amount, purchase order, vessel manufacturer, delivery date or operative patrol schedule.

In other words, the difference between asking for money and receiving money is crucial. It would be incorrect to write that the county “won a $400,000 boating grant” based only on this Board item. Local residents may wish to check the latest county grants and procurement records for a later award acceptance and contract.

Other rules lake users still need to follow

Even if public-safety equipment is upgraded, visitors must still follow the two lakes’ current boating and access regulations. The Monterey County Lake San Antonio visitor page says boats on Nacimiento and San Antonio require a valid vessel-screening permit before launch, with a specific exception for participants currently enrolled in Nacimiento’s Resident Vessel Program. The rule is intended to reduce the spread of invasive quagga and zebra mussels.

Similarly, Nacimiento floating docks have a separate MCWRA licensing regime. A possible new patrol jet ski would not change an individual dock owner’s licensing obligation. These are different regulatory and budget processes; this article focuses on the April 2026 grant application.

Where to follow the outcome

Search Monterey County File 26-396 and subsequent Board agendas for any return item accepting a grant. The California Division of Boating and Waterways administers statewide boating programs, but a general agency grant announcement cannot replace a specific Monterey County award record.
